The brief for this project was to enhance an existing magazine article through creative illustration. I selected the feature article “where’s my robot?” from the magazine Frankie. My illustration replaces a photograph of a toy robot. The article humourlessly talks of the way robots could one day be doing everything for us. For this reason, I chose to create a cute illustration of a robot taking on the human activity of cooking breakfast. To make the illustration fitting with the style of the magazine, my robot was drawn to have a vintage feel, with traditional toy robot features. The concept was developed through sketches then drawn using illustrator. I created everything in a controlled way – no scans or Wacom – instead I used the rectangle and ellipse tool and a few calculated pen drawings. This mechanical approach is fitting to the content of the illustration. It was then finished in Photoshop, where I added colour and textures – keeping true to the Frankie feel.
